How to Measure Water Clarity With a Secchi Disk

Oceanographers have been using a Secchi disk to gauge water transparency since the 19th century. It is a simple tool. A circular plate, about 30 centimeters in diameter, painted flat white on one side. That is all you need to determine how clear a body of water is.

The Mechanics of Visibility

Why use a white disk? The human eye detects the transition from visible to invisible with surprising precision. The method relies on that sensitivity.

The procedure is straightforward.
1. Lower the disk into the water until it is just barely perceptible.
2. Lower it further until it disappears completely.
3. Raise it again until it reappears.

You record the depth where the disk vanishes and the depth where it returns. Averaging these two points gives you the Secchi depth. The greater the depth, the more transparent the water.

Why This Matters

This measurement is not just academic trivia. Water clarity affects ecosystems, industrial cooling systems, and even climate models. Algal blooms, sediment, and pollutants all reduce the Secchi depth. A low number signals trouble.

How does it compare to electronic sensors? While turbidity sensors provide continuous data, the Secchi disk remains valuable for fieldwork. It is inexpensive, durable, and requires no calibration. In remote locations, a $20 disk often outperforms a $2,000 sensor that needs regular maintenance.
