Skipping dinner? No. Just stop eating before bedtime.
That is the takeaway from a small but provocative new study. Researchers at Rutgers University found that older women with overweight or obesity who compressed their eating window improved their cognitive test scores. Specifically, those who ate within a nine-hour period and stopped eating four hours before sleep showed better spatial planning and problem-solving abilities.
The results are not a cure-all. This was a pilot study. The numbers were small. But if larger trials confirm these hints, we may have a simple, free intervention to help stave off age-related cognitive decline.
The mechanics of time-restricted eating
Prof Sue Shapses leads the nutrition research. She notes that while weight loss itself slows cognitive decline, there may be additional benefits to timing your calories.
The trial involved 47 women, aged 50 to 79. They were all living with overweight or obesity. For six months, they cut 500 calories daily. Half the group, 26 women, were instructed to eat only within a nine-hour frame. Most ate between 10 am and 6 pm. The others spread their intake over roughly 12 hours.
Did the restricted group lose more weight? No.
Both groups dropped an average of 7 kg (15 lbs). The weight loss was identical.
So what separated them?
Cognitive performance.
On tests measuring spatial planning and problem solving, the early eaters outperformed the later eaters. Memory and learning tests showed hints of improvement too, though multitasking and reaction times remained the same.
Shapses describes the effects as “modest.” They are not dramatic. But they matter. For older adults, a slight edge in memory retention and reduced errors in attention can mean the difference between independence and needing care.

Why does timing matter for the brain?
We need to look at the biology. It is not magic. It is metabolism fighting against circadian rhythms.
In the UK and US, most people eat over a 14-hour window. We snack late. We watch TV while we chew. This leaves only a 10-hour fasting period overnight. But research suggests that extending this fast yields health dividends.
A review published in January linked finishing dinner before 7 pm with better BMI, waist circumference, and blood pressure markers.
Prof Wendy Hall, a nutritional sciences expert at King’s College London (not involved in the Rutgers study), sees the connection.
“Confining mealtimes to a narrow window… may have benefits for the brain,” she said. She points to three drivers:
- Blood sugar control
- Vascular function
- Inflammation levels
Late-night meals disrupt these. The body is winding down for sleep. It is not built to digest heavy loads then. By shifting the window earlier, we reduce metabolic stress. That stress reduction likely extends to the brain.
The dementia connection
Dementia is the seventh leading cause of death globally. Nearly 2 million people die from it every year. It is the leading cause in the UK.
We cannot change genetics. We cannot reverse age. But experts believe nearly half of all cases could be prevented or delayed. Lifestyle is the key.
Obesity in midlife is a huge risk factor. It raises dementia risk by 30% later in life.
So, does time-restricted eating offer protection beyond weight loss?
The Rutgers pilot suggests yes. The women who ate early improved in domains linked to early cognitive decline. They made fewer errors. They solved problems more effectively.
If this holds up in larger, peer-reviewed studies, it could shift how we advise older adults. Not just “eat less.” But “eat earlier.”
Where the science stands now
Nutrition 2026 in Maryland hosted the presentation of these findings. Shapses and her team are now digging deeper into why the timing helps.
Is it inflammation? Is it the liver? Or is it purely about giving the brain a break from constant digestive processing?
The answers are not here yet. The study is preliminary. Peer review is pending. Clinically meaningful improvements need validation.
But the pattern is clear. When you eat may be just as important as what you eat.
Consider your last meal. Is it three hours before bed? Or is it at 9 pm, right before you collapse into sleep?
The clock is ticking. Your brain might prefer an earlier finish.
