Existing Drugs Like Nasal Spray Could Slow Aging, Researchers Claim

We want to live longer. We want to stay healthy while doing it. The problem is that new anti-aging drugs take decades to develop. They are expensive. They often fail.

Researchers at Northeastern University and Harvard Medical School have a different idea. Why look for new compounds when we already have thousands of approved medications sitting on pharmacy shelves? Repurposing existing drugs is faster. It is cheaper. It skips years of safety testing that we already know works.

But which drugs should we try?

There are 6,442 FDA-approved medications. Testing all of them for longevity is impossible. It’s a needle in a haystack. The needle, however, might be your nasal spray.

How Scientists Found Anti-Aging Candidates in Current Medications

The team published a framework in Nature Aging. It maps genes connected to the biological hallmarks of aging. Think of these hallmarks as the body’s wear and tear. Cells lose energy. Proteins misfold. Communication between cells breaks down.

They looked at 1,250 aging-related genes. They placed them on the human interactome. This is a massive database of how proteins interact. Over half a million interactions.

Here is the surprise.

Aging genes do not scatter randomly across the network. They cluster. They hang out in specific neighborhoods.

“If the genes were spread randomly,” says network scientist Bnaya Gross, “there is no way for a drug to specifically affect them.”

But because they cluster, drugs that target those neighborhoods hit multiple aging hallmarks at once. This allows researchers to screen existing drugs quickly. They filter the 6,442 candidates against these gene clusters. They look for drugs that slow down the aging processes rather than accelerate them.

Why Common Cold Medication Might Help You Live Longer

One name popped up. It wasn’t a exotic experimental compound.

It was oxymetazoline.

You probably know it by a different name. Afrin. Sinex. It’s an over-the-counter nasal decongestant. It also comes in eye drops for redness. It treats rosacea.

Nobody linked oxymetazoline to longevity before. The new analysis shows it improves cell-to-cell communication. This is a key hallmark of aging. As we get older, our cells stop talking to each other efficiently. Oxymetazoline seems to help them chat again.

Aspirin was another hit. Scientists have already been testing aspirin for aging benefits. This method confirms it. It also identified other candidates. The framework doesn’t just list drugs. It explains why they work. It points to the specific biological mechanisms.

Albert-László Barabás, a network scientist at Northeastern, put it simply.

“The challenge is figuring out which drugs are worthtesting.”

This study provides the map. It highlights actionable interventions. These can be tested in cells. Then animals. Then humans.

Is There a Cure for Aging?

No. This isn’t a fountain of youth.

“This study does not provide a cure for aging,” Barabás says. “Nor does it prove that any specific drug will extent human life.”

It’s a roadmap. Aging is complex. It involves many factors. A single drug won’t fix everything. We likely need combinations. Treatments that hit several hallmarks simultaneously.

The method is robust. It identifies why a drug might help. That makes the next steps easier. We can move from guesswork to targeted testing.

Barabás admits the appeal.

“As someone whose hair turned gray years ago,” he says, “I share the universal wish that there might one be a pill that slows aspects of aging.”

We are not there yet. But we are closer. The pharmacy is already open. We just need to know what to grab off the shelf.

Maybe it’s aspirin. Maybe it’s decongestant. Maybe it’s both.

The science is narrowing the field. The next few years will tell us if these common pills can truly slow time. Or if we just need to keep waiting for something new.
